StockX was founded in 2015 by Josh Luber and is described as a “stock market of things.” The main focus is shoes, however, you will also find jackets, watches, and designer bags. StockX weeds out all of the fake sneakers by acting as a middleman, which is similar to GOAT. After a sale occurs, the seller sends the item to stop headquarters and they determine authenticity before completing the transaction. You are able to track your order status during the whole process, so the customer is not left in the dark. You are also able to keep track of your past purchases. This is a nice feature in case you are concerned about the amount of money you spend on things like shoes and swag. As far as using StockX as a seller, it is very easy. You have to upload high-quality pics and set your price. If your item sells, StockX emails you a printable shipping label. After the authentication process is finished, your item ships to the owner and you get paid. StockX keeps about 10% of proceeds, and this percentage down as you become a higher volume seller. One of the cool features of StockX is the comprehensive graph each item shows a price history similar to a stock. This is helpful to a buyer or a seller in getting a good deal or the top price.

Stockx Reviews

Positive Reviews

Buyers enjoy the stock market aspect of the website which shows price fluctuations for specific sneaker

Buyers enjoy the authentication guarantee and fast shipping

Buyers enjoy the fact that you can browse other items like jackets and bags

Buyers enjoy incentives as you go, for example, free shipping on your sixth purchase

Buyers enjoy the huge variety of sneakers including many vintage selections in good shape

Sellers enjoy the simplicity of listing items and the amount of the sale that they receive

Sellers enjoy the incentive to receive a greater percentage of the purchase if they sell more volume

Negative Reviews

Buyers do not like the fact that they can’t return an item. Keep in mind that they will refund an item if you end up proving it is not authentic. This rarely happens.

Buyers were not happy with some of their customer service experiences.

Buyers were not satisfied with how long shipping took for some orders. Keep in mind the authentication process takes some time and is worth it in the long run to make sure clients are getting the real deal.

Conclusion

Overall, we feel that StockX is a great platform to buy and sell limited edition sneakers. The authentication process ensures that you get the real deal goods, and you can browse other items besides shoes such as Supreme gear. They offer incentives for both buyers and sellers which rewards them for activity. We have dealt with your customer service several times and it was fast and easy. It could be one of the only places to find rare shoes from Nike, Air Jordans, Adidas, New Balance, Vans, Converse, etc. Our favorite aspect of the company is the authenticity process which will guarantee that you are getting the real deal. GOAT launched in 2015 from cofounders Eddy Lu and Daishin Sugano and has become one of the most popular apps to buy and sell rare shoes on secondary market. If you are up to date on your sneakerhead slang, then you know that GOAT is an acronym for Greatest Of All Time. The idea was born after one of the cofounders got bamboozled by a pair of fake Jordans on Ebay. They have a system to guarantee authenticity which includes sending shoes to be inspected by the crew at GOAT before they ship to the new owner. The team considers many factors including weight, stitching, fonts, and even smell. Yes, Nikes have a distinct smell, and you can’t fake it. We surveyed some users and came up with some pros and cons of the GOAT:

Baby Goat

Positive Reviews

Buyers like the authenticity guarantee process you to ensure legit kicks.

Buyers like the minimalist design of the app and website.

Buyers like that there is no extra fee for purchasing shoes.

Buyers enjoy the great bargains and huge selection of sneakers.

Buyers enjoy the fast processing and shipping of the shoes.

Negative Reviews

Some buyers experienced slow shipping or cancellation of their order. Keep in mind this is a reseller website, so go can’t control the actions of the seller.

Some buyers experienced technical issues with the app. We recommend you make sure you have the most recent version of the app, or just use the website if there are any issues. Our experience with the app has been fine.

Some sellers thought it was difficult to get their shoes approved for selling. Keep in mind this process helps weed out fake shoes, which is the whole point.

Some sellers thought that it took too long to get paid after selling a pair of shoes. Keep in mind that this is escrow service and the company needs to make sure that the buyer’s payment goes through.

Conclusion

We feel that GOAT is a great marketplace for limited-edition sneakers whether you are buying or selling. It might be one of the only places to find sold-out grails from Nike, Air Jordans, Adidas, New Balance, Vans, Converse, etc. Our favorite aspect of the company is the authenticity process which will guarantee that you are getting the real deal. We learned a lot about Michael Jordan in The Last Dance, but it was mostly about his professional life. There was a lot on his father, but hardly any information about his current personal life. So who is Michael Jordan’s wife?

Michael Jordan’s current wife is Yvette Prieto. She is 41 years old and was born in Cuba but raised in Miami. She is a former model and used to work with major brands like Alexander Wang. They were married in 2013 at a lavish $10 million wedding and were blessed with identical twin daughters Ysabel and Victoria in 2014. MJ had previously been married to Juanita Vanoy from 1989 to 2006 and they have three children together.

Yvette Prieto Michael Jordans Wife

Yvette dated Julio Iglesias Jr in the early 2000’s. She met Jordan at a Miami nightclub in 2008 and they began dating. She can be seen in the documentary Cuba: An Island Apart which is described as the “bloody, passionate, triumphant and strikingly beautiful story of Cuba.” She keeps a low profile since becoming married to Jordan. Her brother, Carlos Prieto, owns a sneaker store in Miami called Solefly and MJ has made several appearances to launch different Air Jordans. She does not model anymore and has become a stepmom to the other three children.

Tinker Hatfield is widely considered the most important sneaker designer of all time, and possibly single-handedly responsible for the entire sneakerhead culture. He has lived in Oregon for most of his life, and attended college at the University of Oregon College of Design. Hatfield was very athletic as a young man, and sports included basketball, track and field, and pole vaulting. Bill Bowerman, the track coach at the University of Oregon, thought that Tinker could compete in the Olympics as a pole vaulter. This may have happened if he didn’t have a serious pole vaulting injury when he fell about 17 feet and tore his ankle.  After graduating, he was hired by Nike almost immediately as a designer in 1981.

Tinker Hatfield Shoe Designer

Initially, this job at Nike was designing displays for trade shows and retail. When the shoe company decided to have a 24-hour shoe design competition, Tinker eagerly submitted some outstanding designs. His career as the lead designer of Nike fashion sneakers started two days after the competition was over. They clearly knew what they had and wanted to nurture this vision.

Tinker Hatfield Jordan 3

Tinker Hatfield completely change the game with his Jordan 3 design. The legendary story involves Michael Jordan showing up several hours late to the meeting where Tinker unveiled the Jordan 3. Clearly, he did not expect to be so blown away by this amazing new sneaker concept. Hatfield designed the Air Jordan three through 15 and decided to take a break. He was quickly back to design the Air Jordan XX, XXIII, XXV, and XXIX, along with the Air Max 1, Air Max 90, Air Trainer, and Air MAG for Back to the Future II. Tinker has a very personal and meaningful relationship with Michael Jordan, and this bond has become the quintessential example of how a designer and athlete can create something truly spectacular. it’s interesting to note that without the Air Jordan 3 design, Michael might have left Nike because he was unhappy with the designs for 1 and 2. As we learned in The Last Dance, Jordan initially wanted to work with Adidas, and they began to show interest after the success of the Air Jordan line. After Jordan was blown away by Hatfield’s designs for the Air Jordan 3, his relationship with Nike was set in stone and the rest is history.

Tinker Hatfield Sketches

Tinker Hatfield was featured in the first season of Netflix‘s show Abstract: The Art of Design, which is a  docu-series that goes in depth with famous designers of different backgrounds. We get to see his amazing process and sketches in this show. His concept sketches are quite striking and could stand alone as original artwork. In these sketches, he is very thorough about describing the specific part of the shoe. It’s very cool to see the actual final product after looking through his sketches.

Tinker Hatfield Net Worth

Tinker was included in Fortune magazine’s list of 100 most influential designers of the 20th century. The artist currently lives in Hillsboro, Oregon, with his wife Jackie, and they have three daughters. His estimated net worth is $25 million. He receives a very large annual salary from Nike, however, most of this wealth is from the stock options that he gets from being one of the lead designers for the company. Tinker is also a very smart investor, and his wealth has grown exponentially over time.

Every sneakerhead was most likely tuned in to the 10 part documentary series The Last Dance which focused on the Chicago Bulls 1998 season, but also went very deep on the entire career of Michael Jordan. We were also watching over here at Kicks Collector headquarters, and here are five interesting tidbits from our perspective.

Michael Jordan Flu Game Pizza
Flu Game Pizza (Image Credit: Kicks Collector)

Jordan wanted to work with Adidas

Yes, it’s hard to believe. In the mid-1980s, Converse was the king of all basketball shoes and endorsements from the likes of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. After Jordan’s explosive rookie season, it made total sense that he wanted to get into the shoe game. Adidas was enjoying pop-culture success by working with rap icons Run DMC, but Jordan wanted his own shoe line, and they were not ready to take this on yet. Of course, years later they went ahead with this concept and created Yeezys with Kanye West. Nike was very interested in working with Jordan, but he was initially very hesitant. It took his Mom’s convincing to take the meeting, and the rest is Air Jordan history.

Jordan’s baseball career ended because of the strike

Everybody knows that Michael Jordan walked away from basketball to play baseball in 1994. He was working his way up in the minor leagues and was getting close to being called up into the majors. When the baseball strike happened, he was not willing to be called up along with the other minor league players in that situation. This frustration led to MJ eventually quitting baseball. He was not the greatest baseball player, but had the strike not happened, he could’ve gone on to play the White Sox instead of going back to basketball for another threepeat.

Jordan wore number 45 when he came back in 1995

Michael Jordan and the number 23 seem virtually interchangeable. We often forget he came back to the Chicago Bulls in 1995 wearing number 45 instead. After a less than stellar start, most likely because his body had been in training for baseball instead of basketball, he decided to back to that magic number 23. They ended up winning the championship that season, along with the following two, so maybe there was some magic in the number.

Jordan’s dad’s death is still puzzling

James Jordan Sr attended a funeral in North Carolina in July 1993. He decided to pull over on side the road to catch up on some much-needed sleep. Two men found him, shot him, and dumped his body into a swamp. They proceeded to steal his car and were captured almost immediately after using his phone. The Last Dance discusses the bizarre theory that he was murdered because of Michael Jordan’s gambling debts. Jordan stated that he only gambled with friends on their golfing matches, but there’s probably more to the story. It seems like James could have easily found and afforded a motel, but his family said he used to pull over and sleep in his car often.

Jordan’s “flu game” illness was from tainted Pizza

Jordan carried the Chicago Bulls to a 90-88 victory over the Utah Jazz in game five of the 1997 Finals. He managed to score 38 points while suffering from a horrible flu like symptoms and it’s part of his amazing legacy. The Last Dance goes into depth on this incident. Apparently, MJ was very hungry the night before, and the only food available to order was pizza. He ordered a pizza from Pizza Hut located in Park city, Utah. Hours after eating the entire pizza, he was on the floor and could barely move. Supposedly, five people delivered the pie, which seemed strange and suggests that they knew it was going to Jordan. The assistant manager, Craig Fite, claimed that he personally made the pizza and there were no intentional shenanigans.

Who is your average sneaker collector? Most people think of a male teenager or young adult, but for all you know, your elderly neighbor might have a closet full of deadstock Air Jordans. We talked to three different sneakerheads that you would not expect to be hoarding kicks.

Inside Mind Sneaker Collector

Verna Malone – Jacksonville, FL

Verna is a nurse in her early 60s from Jacksonville, Florida. her son dabbled in sneaker collecting around 2005, and then she became hooked after figuring out the market. Her son doesn’t have much interest anymore, but she has amassed an impressive collection of over 200 pairs of limited edition Nike and Air Jordans. She had gotten into the Beanie Baby craze in the 90s, and that was the impetus of the sneaker collecting phase. She told us There’s something about being the first group of people to buy something that is limited, and then basking at the glory of owning the property. It’s like buying a cheap stock at the beginning of a very successful corporation. I like the colors, and it’s fun to see what the designers come up with each year.” Verna does resell her collection on eBay and StockX, but also displays some of her treasures in her home as eccentric decor. She said her son laughs at her and jokes about eventually inheriting all of these sweet kicks one day. She specifically gets pairs in his size.

James Vanderbilt – Brainerd, MN

James Vanderbilt is a 54 year old fishing guide from Brainerd, Minnesota. When he is not helping clients seek out the elusive walleye of Lake Mille Lacs, he is taking notes using his outdated iPhone 5 and an old-fashioned notebook about upcoming limited edition sneaker dates. James is a reseller, but he will always be wearing a cool pair of kicks. “If I really like the pair, I will purchase extra for my personal use. It’s become part of my brand, people refer to me as the fishing guide with the cool shoes. I usually go for the bright neon colors.” His allegiance is mostly to the Nike catalog, but he has recently acquired an impressive Yeezy collection. We like the idea of a fishing guide in Minnesota wearing the craziest looking alien Yeezys.

Father Cormac O’Donovan – Bend, OR

Cormac O’Donovan is a Catholic priest in Bend, Oregon. As you might have guessed, he is very Irish and was born in Belfast. He came to the United States to attend Harvard with a focus in theology, and ended up becoming a priest. His love of limited-edition sneakers might be only eclipsed by his passion for his faith. Cormac started collecting sneakers in the 1980s, and his prized possession is an original first edition pair of Air Jordans. They are not in great shape, and I wish I had had the foresight to keep them in new condition,” he said in a joking manner with his unmistakable Irish accent. “I’ve learned how to be a good collector now, and most of my sneakers have never been opened.” Much like James the fishing guide, he does wear some of his cool kicks when he gives his sermons. “My congregation likes to guess which pair I will be wearing for big occasions. The fanciest ones come out for Christmas and Easter mass.” Cormac does also occasionally resell his shoes on the secondary market and donates the proceeds to his church.

Kicks Collector got the chance to review several of the New Balance shoes from 2020 and here are our top five picks.

Casablanca Tennis Club 327

New Balance Casablance 327 Orange

The New Balance Casablanca 327 was released on April 18th, 2020, and sneaker collectors were waiting for it. There are two bright colorways including a bright orange (which we prefer because it looks like a creamsicle), and a beautiful faded green springtime model. We really like how the signature “N” gets blown up and becomes less recognizable and part of the overall pattern. The Moroccan influence brings in a funky 1970s retro style that feels vintage and current at the same time. The retail price was $149.99 and it sold out very fast.

atmos 850

Atmos 850 New Balance

The atmos 850 was released on April 11, 2020, and is a collaboration with the iconic Japanese designer atmos. These shoes have a rugged outdoor quality similar to the Justin Timberlake “Air Higher” Jordans. They look like a strange and unusual fungus that grew out of an old decomposing tree trunk in the forest. There are three different shades of green and beautiful earthy orange accents. Our favorite aspect of these kicks is the subtle purple highlight from inside the shoe. The retail price was $130 and sold out in record time.

1700 Kith The Colorist Pink Toe

1700 Kith The Colorist Pink Toe

Ronnie Fieg’s KITH collabed with NB to unveil the 1700 “The Colorist” collection, and we really like the pink toe version. The designer considers himself a master of color theory, we have to admit he has the skills. This version is made up of eye-popping powder blue, and gradually fades into a pink and crimson at the toe. These fly pastel sneakers are masculine and feminine the same time, kind of like Prince. They were released on January 31st, 2020, with retail price of $260 (and were gone in about 60 seconds.)

992 Multi-Color

New Balance 992 Multi Color

The 992 multi-color dropped this year and they pack a serious punch of color. The design focuses on the timeless complementary color combination of orange and blue. The saturation continues with a vibrant yellow “N” smack dab in the blue layer. These kicks have a late 1980s hip-hop vibe, and the purple and red highlights really seal the deal. The New Balance designs are becoming more and more modern, and we are excited to see the future of the 992s. These shoes were released on January 15th, 2020, with a retail price of $245.

990v5 Molten Lava

New Balance 990v5 Molten Lava 1

The 990v5 Molten Lava is a very fetching eye-popping monochromatic red design with a striking light blue highlight at the bottom. The vibrant red is flashy without getting too crazy on the color palette. The minimal placement of the “N” is classy and understated. These shoes were released on January 28, 2020, and retailed for $175.

Every kicks collector should stay on top of the new releases, and there are so many dropping these days it’s hard to keep up. Most sneakerheads can squeeze in another pair of Jordans. Of course, this might mean adding more to your sneaker storage scenario, but it’s worth it. It’s important to get the kicks when the drop, so you can purchase them for the MSRP. Here is a list of our top five styles of the Air Jordans along with their release dates from April to the end of 2020. As far as we know, the Covid-19 pandemic is not delaying any of these releases dates. We will update this post if we hear otherwise.

Air Jordans Hare 2.0 Pink

Air Jordan 7 Retro SE “Hare 2.0”

The Hare 2.0 is a beautiful color palette incorporating a neutral gray which reads more like a seafoam green along with the beautiful pink. The jumpman’s elegant minimal placement really ties this pair together. These more muted colors are nice change of pace. The Hare 2.0 drops April 8th, 2020, with a retail price of $250.

WMNS Air Jordan 1 Retro Mid SE “Lightbulb”

The Lightbulb is everything we want a bright and loud pair of kicks to be. The black Swoosh is prominent on a white background, and the multicolor sections turn these shoes into a beautiful Frankenstein monster. This feels like a classic hip-hop design. The Lightbulb drops April 9th, 2020, with a retail price of $130.

Air Jordan Retro Rasta 4

WMNS Air Jordan 4 Retro “Rasta”

Whether you are a huge Bob Marley fan, or just enjoy any reggae music, the Rasta is the pair of kicks you need to add to your collection. We really like the vibrant red green and yellow on the tongue, and the jumpman looks really cool on top of it. Another highlight the green and red checkered pattern on the sides. The bright pops of color on white palette makes the shoes aesthetically appealing. The Rasta drops April 9th, 2020, with a retail price of $190.

Air Jordan White Breds 2020

Air Jordan 11 Retro Low “White Bred”

The White Bred incorporates a new design within the classic black and red (or bred of you know your lingo) color way. A shiny black, organic line cuts through the middle of the all white shoe. The red soul provides a great shot of color on an otherwise black-and-white design. The White Bred drops May 22nd, 2020, with a retail price of $185.

Air Jordan 12 University Gold 1

Air Jordan 12 Retro “University Gold”

The University Gold incorporates a bold black and gold color palette that would make a great gift for any Pittsburgh Steelers fan. The design of these kicks seems like it has a Yeezy influence. The Jordan Brand is getting a little weird and sci-fi, and we think it offers a refreshing change. The University Gold drops July 18th, 2020, with a retail price of $190.

We typically think of Justin Timberlake as the dude in the suit and tie all dressed up for a nightclub. His last album, Man of the Woods, debuted a whole new look for the artist which weighed heavily on flannel and the outdoors. Timberlake also unveiled a new pair of Jordans called Air Higher which has a rugged, down to earth feel. He collaborated with designer Tinker Hatfield, who worked with him on previous shoes.

Timberlake Air Higher Jordan Kicks 1

Justin made a statement about the live instrumentation of the album, and how he wanted the sneakers to have the same vibe of being made by hand and not feeling factory produced. We got the chance to inspect these kicks over here at Kicks Collector headquarters, and were very impressed with the subtle nuances including the minimal jumpman and swoosh which is the same light brown color as the bulk of the shoe. There is a cool reflective material used on the swoosh which gives it a fun and unexpected nighttime shimmer. I guess you can’t completely remove the glam from JT, you can only try to contain it.
